Often, as women age or as a result of vaginal childbirth, the vagina may relax and lose much of its original elasticity. This can range from a barely noticeable reduction in “tightness” to a visibly gaping vaginal opening, sometimes accompanied by visibly prolapsed vaginal tissue.

We can sometimes address milder cases of vaginal relaxation through a program of pelvic floor strengthening exercises. The time it takes to see results can vary widely, from a few weeks to several months.

However, in most cases, if the vaginal relaxation is pronounced enough to be problematic, the condition may require a vaginal rejuvenation procedure to correct. If that’s the case, you may be wondering how long it will take to repair a slack or relaxed vagina. Good news—it’s probably quicker than you’d think.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Timeline

The procedure itself takes one to two hours, and is usually done in less than five hours, including preparation and recovery room time. You’ll return home the day of your procedure.

The next three or four days, you’ll want to take it easy, but can resume most activities. Many patients are able to return to work a day or two after their procedure and resume light household duties almost immediately.

You should avoid vigorous exercise, baths and swimming for at least four to six weeks after vaginal rejuvenation surgery. This is to reduce any risk of infection while your vaginal tissue continues to heal.

Just six weeks after your procedure, you should be fully healed and your stitches nearly or completely dissolved. Most patients are able to resume intercourse at this point, as well as tampon or menstrual cup use.

Six to eight weeks after your procedure, you should be completely healed. In most cases, a new partner would not even be able to tell you’ve had anything done.
